Recently, the Global Citizen Scholars from Allegheny College journeyed to Tucson, Arizona and Nogales, Mexico to get a closer look at what is really going on at the U.S. Southern border. At this event in Grounds For Change, we will be discussing some of the most impactful experiences from this trip. While we were deeply moved by much of what we witnessed, this event will focus on legislation which has institutionalized discriminatory practices. Through a discussion of our personal experiences and the history of this legislation, we hope to give a glimpse into a situation of which many people in the United States are not aware of. We will introduce the concept of “the right not to migrate” and serve Cafe Justo, an ethically sourced coffee brand that supports economic opportunity for individuals in Mexico. We hope you can join us!
We will also be hosting the “Lens on the Border” photo exhibit sponsored by the Sierra Club. This highlights the work of many famous photographers in what many of them consider an “act of resistance” in the way they see the Border and the Border Wall.
